Due - An original composition
This piece is the second piece I’ve recorded for piano. It’s based almost entirely off of the color green. The title “Due” (pronounced the Italian way “du-eh”) has multiple meanings— in Italian, due means “two.” Two because being one is too lonely. Secondly because this is my second piece. In Norwegian and Finnish, due means “dove,” the bird of peace. To me, the piece is almost a homage to the color green and gives me the sensation of flying above a city of trees.

For my Photography III class, Mr. O’malley gave us an assignment to photograph someone who has helped make the world a better place. This is my “better because of.”
I photographed Joel Burns during a hot chocolate social he hosted on the streets of downtown Fort Worth to gather support for a proposed streetcar system. He is a city councilman for District 9 in Fort Worth, Texas. In October 2010, Joel posted a YouTube video. The video received national and international press attention after he spoke at a council meeting about the issue of suicide among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth. As part of Dan Savage’s It Gets Better campaign, Mr. Burns came out publicly to tell the world about growing up as a gay teen in Texas. Since then, he has traveled the country and visited President Obama in Washington to discuss the issue of bullying. Joel Burns’ YouTube video has 2,600,000 views and counting. Fort Worth, the LGBT community and the world are all better because of Joel Burns.
